2012.05.2 - Launching ES-SO Position Paper: Solar Shading is Essential for Low Energy Buildings
Solar shading is a key element for improving the energy efficiency and daylight management of existing buildings and in optimising the low-energy designs of new buildings. This existing technology which is so far under-utilised can provide a major impact on the reduction of energy consumption and the carbon footprint of the built environment. At the same time it can improve the thermal and visual comfort of occupants. But solar shading must be considered in the very early design phase of the building - or its refurbishment. The ES-SO Position Paper is now being presented to other stakeholders in the building sector (Active House Alliance is among the first to endorse the paper).

2012.05.2 - Child safety blind cords- revised standards
In light of the EU Commission Decision of 27 July 2011,the standard for internal blinds, EN 13120, is under revision.
Some of the key changes for internal blinds operated by cords, ball-chains or similar that may form a hazardous loop will be:
• New requirements, including restrictions on the length of the operating cords or ball-chains, and related tests to verify that no hazardous loops can be formed
• Safety warnings on products and in instruction leaflets
• Requirements for name or trademark of manufacturer or importer and professional installer to be displayed on the product
• New requirements related to safety devices to be integrated in complete internal blinds as well as delivered as such for the retrofit market.

2012.04.25 - ITRS-study : dynamic insulation and solar shading
This study was initiated by Industrieverband Technische Textilien, Rollladen, Sonnenschutz (ITRS e.V.), Moenchengladbach, Germany and was carried out by Ingenieurbüro Hauser IBH, Kassel, Germany. The study simulates and quantifies the possible saving potential of energy used in buildings for heating and cooling through roller shutters and solar shading devices. The results show that automated, dynamic roller shutters and solar shading devices can significantly decrease both the demand of energy for heating in winter and for cooling in summer.

2012.03.27 - Solar Shading labelling in the Netherlands
Since 2012 HR-Zonwering - high efficiency solar shading labels are introduced in the Netherlands. With this concept the market wants to distinguish high efficient solar shading from other types of solar shading,
HR-Zonwering lays the focus on those properties which are important to select high energy efficient solar shading in buildings. Also high efficient solar shading has to be regarded as a system (installation) and not as a decoration only.

2011.11.15 - ES-SO Seminar at R+T 2012 Stuttgart
Solar shading essential for low energy buildings
The tendency towards NZEB - nearly zero energy buildings with main focus on high insulated and airtight buildings will increase the need to apply solar shading, in particular to avoid overheating in summer conditions. Solar shading solutions do not only care for energy saving, but also help to maintain a healthy and comfortable indoor climate for the user. This seminar focuses on the latest scientific findings and presents the importance and challenges for the solar shading industry.

2011.11.15 - Climate Protection by Reducing Cooling Demand in Buildings
The Umweltbundesamt, the German Federal Environment Agency published a study on “Climate Protection by Reducing Cooling Demand in Buildings”. The German study is available under http://www.uba.de/uba-info-medien/3979.html and includes a summary in English (9-pages). It describes an estimation on the potential reduction in electricity demand from cooling appliances in buildings in Germany.
