Why do we need a European body for solar shading?
As the EU grows in size, it also grows in complexity as more Member States join. The European institutions are framing legislation and directives that apply to all Member States and which supersede national policies. It is ES-SO's mission to ensure that the industry's message is heard at this level.
The EU's Energy Performance of Buildings Directives (EPBD 2002 and since 2010 the RECAST EPBD), have the ambitious goal of cutting buildings' energy consumption by 20% and, if this can be achieved in buildings, it could cut over 8% of Europe's total energy consumption. One of the simplest and most effective ways of doing this is by proper solar shading, preferably automatically controlled. ES-SO's mission is to ensure that all the relevant parties, from policy makers and politicians to architects and builders, are aware of the contribution solar shading can make. By doing so, ES-SO and the European solar shading industry will make their contribution towards the EU's Kyoto commitments.
