Global Shading Day

Global Shading Day raises awareness about the benefits of solar shading for people, ecology, and the economy. Given the accelerating pace of climate change, implementing solar shading standards in building legislation is a logical step. Unprotected glass allows excessive heat into buildings, leading to overheating and health issues. Shading glazing is a passive cooling solution, vital for energy efficiency. Each year, on 21 March, ES-SO calls for attention to solar shading, highlighting its importance in combatting global warming and making buildings more climate resilient:


  • Buildings contribute to 40% of European energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Smart solar shading could cut CO2 emissions by up to 100 million tonnes and save €285 billion.
  • Potential 60% energy savings for building cooling by 2050.
  • Failure to act will increase air conditioning demand by 60% due to climate change and heatwaves.


Making solar shading a mandatory technical building solution is a crucial step towards prioritizing passive cooling in buildings. By integrating solar shading into building management systems, we can intelligently and energy-efficiently manage heat and light. These sustainable passive cooling systems not only provide control over daylight but also contribute to residents' well-being and functionality. Additionally, solar shading solutions serve an insulation function for windows during winter.

 

If we don't act now, by 2050 nearly 50% of buildings in Europe will use active cooling.
